The Power of Equine-Assisted Services at Making Strides Foundation

National Nonprofit Day is the perfect time to shine a light on the work we're doing at the Making Strides Foundation! Our mission is to enhance the lives of children and young adults living with disabilities by promoting inclusivity, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and providing a flexible learning environment. Through our specialized equine-assisted services, we create unique opportunities for growth and empowerment.

Here’s a closer look at the programs we offer:

Hippotherapy

Hippotherapy is more than just riding a horse—it's a dynamic form of therapy that leverages the horse's natural gait to improve physical, cognitive, and emotional outcomes for individuals with disabilities. Guided by our licensed occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech language pathologists, participants engage in tailored exercises that can improve balance, coordination, strength, and communication skills. The rhythmic movement of the horse helps stimulate the rider's muscles and nervous system in a way that traditional therapies can't match, leading to remarkable progress in motor skills and emotional well-being.

Adaptive Riding Lessons

Our Adaptive/Therapeutic Riding Lessons are designed to offer a supportive and inclusive environment where individuals of all abilities can experience the joy and empowerment of horseback riding. Certified instructors work one-on-one with each rider, tailoring lessons on and off the horse. Whether it's mastering basic riding skills or developing a deep connection with their equine partner, our adaptive riding program builds confidence, self-esteem, and independence in every participant. The benefits extend beyond the arena, fostering a sense of accomplishment that riders carry with them into their daily lives.

Equine-Assisted Learning Programs

Our Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) Programs go beyond the individual experience, offering opportunities for groups to learn, connect and grow together. EAL is a learning approach that utilizes horses in the teaching and development of life skills.

Whether it's a customized group program, an educational field trip, or a session at our inclusive summer horse camp and Weekend Workshops, our EAL programs help participants build confidence and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and others—all while interacting with our gentle, well-trained horses in a supportive and inclusive setting.
